This is a simple, unadorned cylindrical tea bowl. It features a wide, stepped foot attached to a flat bottom, with the interior of the foot shallowly carved into a perfect circle. A thick layer of black glaze covers the entire bowl, with glaze runs appearing on the rim and part of the body. Three fine marks remain on the wide, stepped footring characteristic of Sōnyū’s work. On the underside of the box lid, the appraiser Saikaku Sō has inscribed: “Black Tea Bowl, by Sōnyū, ‘Young Warrior,’ Sōshitsu (signature).” The name likely derives from the robust and taut quality of the piece’s construction.
