This is a semi-cylindrical tea bowl with the rim slightly pressed inward. A large foot is attached to the bottom, and the interior of the foot is shallowly carved. The interior is deep, with a pool for tea at the bottom, and the black glaze applied over the entire bowl has a smooth, velvety texture on both the interior and exterior. Three kiln marks remain on the narrow, rounded foot rim. On the underside of the box lid, Chokusai has inscribed: “Sōnyū Black Tea Bowl, Umegoromo (seal).” This tea bowl has been passed down within the Raku family.
