Black Tea Bowl, Sōnyū

Height: 9.7 cm, Mouth Diameter: 9.0 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.4 cm
Raku Museum
This is a cylindrical tea bowl with a modest, understated form, featuring a slightly flared rim, though the body is subtly adorned with broad vertical lines. The foot is large, with a narrow base, and the interior of the foot is deeply carved. A rich, lustrous kaseglaze covers the entire piece, and although a seal mark is stamped inside the footring, it is obscured by the glaze and not clearly visible. Three traces of the kiln shelf remain on the footring. On the underside of the box lid, the 9th-generation Ryōnyū has inscribed “Made by Sōnyū: Kurosaki Tea Bowl, 9th-generation Ryōnyū Seal” and affixed his retirement seal.
