The rim is drawn inward, the waist is strongly flared, and one side of the body is pressed to create a distortion. The foot is low; the base is widened by applying flat clay at three points where the layers meet, and a shallow, swirl-shaped indentation is carved into the interior of the foot. A distinct circular tea pool is clearly formed in the interior. The sides of the foot are flat, and at first glance, the form is reminiscent of Chōjirō’s “Shunkan.” The glaze applied over the entire piece is jet-black and glossy, but it has been fired into Sōnyū’s unique crackled glaze. On the underside of the box lid is an inscription by Jushinsai reading, “Sōnyū Black Tea Bowl, Kamege (signature).”
