Red Cylindrical Tea Bowl, Single Piece

Height: 9.0 cm, Mouth Diameter: 8.5 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.8 cm
Raku Museum
As indicated on the underside of the lid of the accompanying box—“Rikyu-style Red Tea Bowl by Tea Bowl Master Raku-yaki Kichizaemon”—this piece is likely modeled after Chojiro’s Rikyu-style cylindrical tea bowl. The form, with the rim drawn inward and the body left largely unadorned, resembles the style of Chojiro’s “Ayame” series. The base features Ichinuki’s characteristic small, low footring, with the interior deeply carved to form a low, swirling vortex pattern. The interior of the bowl features a clearly defined tea pool, with a stepped rim running around the inside. The glaze applied over the entire piece has a pale red hue and is what is known as a “sand glaze.”
