This tea bowl, with a style similar to the “Yoko” red flat tea bowl, is quintessentially Sairi in character. The rim is slightly curved inward, the body is nearly vertical, and the surface from the foot to the waist is strongly carved to create a pronounced curve. The footring is of the so-called “shiitake mushroom” style often seen in Mino ware tea bowls; a shallow hood-shaped indentation is carved into the interior of the footring, and fine incisions run around its perimeter. On the exterior, flat vertical ridges are applied, similar to those on the sides of the foot; on the interior, a single step has been carved. The glaze applied over the entire surface is thick and has melted well into a milky white hue. On the lid’s exterior, Sairyu has inscribed “Nihyaku-no-uchi, Raku Sairyu-in,” and on the lid’s interior, Jushinsai has inscribed “Tatsuta Sōsa (signature).”
