This is a semi-cylindrical tea bowl with a slightly inward-curving rim and a distinctly flared body. The bowl is thickly formed throughout, with a thick layer of black glaze covering the entire surface except for the foot and its sides, and a curtain glaze encircling the rim. The foot is compact and well-defined, yet deep inside, with a wide base that gives it a robust presence. The characters “Hachijusan Rōzō” are carved on the side of the foot, and inside the foot is stamped with a so-called “Hakuraku-in” (retired master’s seal). It was stored as a pair with the red tea bowl shown in Figure 170, and Rokkōsai has written the character “寿” (longevity) in red lacquer on the side of the foot. On the underside of the box lid, Rokkōsai has inscribed “Red and Black Tea Bowls, Made by Fuku-ju-tan (signature).”
