Keinyu: tea bowl, known as “Chitose”, Black Raku

Height: 7.5 cm, Mouth Diameter: 9.4 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.0 cm
This semi-cylindrical tea bowl features a rim that gently curves inward, a slightly tapered body, and a flared base. The footring is wide and flat, with the clay left exposed. On one side of the body, pine needles and pine cones are depicted by scraping away the glaze, and scattered throughout are white mottled patterns resembling patches of yellowing. The black glaze is applied somewhat thickly and has melted well. An “Inkaku” seal is stamped inside the foot ring. On the outside of the box lid, Kei-nyu’s own handwriting reads: “Pine Needle Design, Black Tea Bowl, Made by the 11th Generation Kei-nyu, Seal.” On the inside of the lid, Rokkoku-sai has inscribed: “Chitose, Left (Signature).”
