One of the major vessels of the Koseto period was the large wide-mouth potter’s vase. Needless to say, this hirokuchi was newly created in the late Kamakura period (1185-1333) under the influence of Chinese ceramics. This hirokuchi is an epoch-making type in terms of the inwardly inclined orifice and the rounded shape. The design is a large peony with a thick round carved floral motif. Based on the shape, pattern, and floral technique, it is thought to date from the early 15th century.
