Uji Bunrin
Uji Bunrin

Specialty. Karamono Bunrin tea caddy. The origin of the name is not clear.
The inscription “uchi funrin no hon” (written by Rikyu on the lid of the box with an accompanying tray) indicates that it had already appeared in that period. Compared to ordinary bunrin, this piece is characterized by its very taut shoulders, and it is also unusual in that it has a fraying like an eroded leaf in the center of the itokiri (thread cutting). The overall luster of the piece is beautifully glossy with an ameiro glaze, and the view of the yellow glaze trickling down the surface is interesting. Originally owned by Katagiri Ishu, it was given to Matsuura Shigenobu in 1672 for 700 koban, and has been in the family ever since. (Taisho Meikikan)
