Utakata

A Chukyo specialty. Ancient tea ceremony utatakata from Daikakuji Temple. The proof is in the “Go-sen-shu” Koi-uta Ise “Sogawa tadashi nagareru mizu no bubbles no utakata hito ni de fade away me ya. It was originally owned by Sakamoto Shusai and passed down to Higashi Honganji Temple, where it barely survived the fire that destroyed the temple in 1823, but Suruga Naganao repaired it and it became the temple’s treasure again. In July of the same year, however, the palace was attacked by a military fire, and the tea caddy was once again baptized by fire.
In September 1865, when the trifoliate garden was rebuilt, the tea caddy was given to Naganao Suruga, and since then, it has been passed down to his descendants, the Ishihara family. Although it was destroyed by fire twice, it was not damaged and has been preserved in its original state. (Charyu Zukan, Taisho Meikikan)
