Utamei (poem inscription)

marusankakusikaku

This term refers to tea utensils whose inscriptions are derived from waka poems (mostly ancient poems). The Chinese poem inscriptions already existed in the Higashiyama period (710-794), including the Chinese tea caddy Hatsuhana (first flower) and Late Sakura (late cherry blossom). Later, Kobori Enshu used this method of inscription to inscribe tea utensils, and was praised for his insight. In later times, he was praised for his insight, and later tea masters of the same school began to refer to specimens as hon-uta. (History of Japanese Ceramics)
