Chosen Karatsu

Chosen Karatsu

One of the so-called Karatsu specialties of antique dealers. It is said to have been produced in the Tensho (1573-1927) to Kan’ei (1624-44) period. The clay is reddish black with a blue-and-white color and a black ame glaze. The clay is mostly used for water jars, plates, and bowls, and rarely for tea bowls. According to the results of recent excavations, these ceramics were mainly excavated from the Fujikawauchi, Onikotake Hobashira, Onikotake Saraya, and Donoyadani kilns.
