Umezawa Memorial Museum
This is probably the largest of all the painted Karatsu pieces from the period. The low, flat bowl is guarded at the mouth and the rim is carelessly plucked to form a ring flower shape, with a large pine tree generously painted over the entire surface and a mokuzoku design at the base. The base of the plate is carved small in relation to the shape of the vessel, a characteristic of all Karatsu dishes. Since almost similar ceramic shards have been excavated, this dish is thought to have been made at the Tani Kiln in Jioya. It is highly valued as a representative masterpiece of e Karatsu.
