This is a typical Kutsu-shape tea bowl. Oribe’s style of Kutsu-shape teacups was first produced in Mino during the Bunroku period (1688-1704), and Karatsu was influenced by this style as well. It is a strongly distorted Kutsu bowl with a stepped mouth, the base is carved out in a round and straight manner as in Karatsu, the tatami mat is slightly wide, and the cutting within the base is shallow. The mouth rim is covered with iron glaze, and iron glaze is applied to the two sides of the body in a single letter. The glaze applied inside and out melts well, and the glazed surface is bluish and well-fired. The tatami mats are carved with a single line to form a double-tiered high style. It was probably made by the Tani Kiln of the jar shop.
