Excavated at Ishiyakushi, Suzuka-shi, Mie. 5th century.
Height 10.4cm, mouth diameter 7.5cm, body diameter 8.0cm, bell stand body diameter 8.2cm, bottom diameter 5.5cm.
This is a rare example of Sue ware with a wide-mouthed short-necked jar on a flat base with a bell. The small jar has a band in the center of the body with a fine comb-like wavy pattern above the band. The foot has a single band on the shoulder and six rectangular watermarks evenly spaced on the body. There is also a single long, narrow watermark on the underside of the base. Four small balls, each about 1 cm in diameter, are placed inside the foot, clearly with a bell in mind. Two smaller versions of this type were excavated from the Seirenji burial mound in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture. This type of vessel with a bell stand has also been excavated from a Nansen burial mound, and it was probably made in the early period of Sue ware under the influence of this type of vessel. It is thin, sharply wheel-thrown, and well fired.
