This is an imposingly large suzuji (water pitcher), which is also worthy of Oribe’s taste. The taut body is slightly tightened at the hem, and the thick rounded seat-like bottom gives a sense of stability. The body has broad convex surfaces vertically in six directions, which may have been designed to resemble an axle. Half of the surface is covered with ash and beadlo yuzu, and half of the surface is burnished red. The thin, dark beadlo yuzu is truly brilliant, and the beauty of the scenery is outstanding among Iga mizusashi. The flat bottom is cracked in the kiln, and the center of the crack is almost completely peeled off, but there are traces of a red lacquer calligraphy that appears to be a floral seal of Sotan.
