This short-necked jar with a covered lid has the same shape as a Shosoin medicine jar. This type of jar is often used as a cremation warehouse bone container, rather than for its original purpose. The short neck is erected outward and the shoulders are high, and the base of the lid is low, but the base is stretched. The lid was made with a low circular strap on the vertical side rim, and judging from the construction of the lid and body, it is thought to date from the middle of the 8th century. The clay is rich in iron, and the surface has a blackish-brown fire color due to smoked reduction firing. The firing temperature was not very high, and the natural ash that fell on the shoulder did not fully dissolve, leaving a yellowish green color with a sprinkling of sesame. The body and cover are both in excellent condition.
