Excavated at Kashizu, Miyazaki-mura, Fukui.
8th century.
Height 12.1cm, mouth diameter 8.6cm, body diameter 14.2cm.
This ware was excavated from one of the Kashizu kiln sites during the construction of the railroad from Takefu to Oda in 1928. The body is oblong and the bottom is slightly outwardly curved for good stability.
It has three pointed key-shaped ears on the shoulder. The clay is slightly sandy and highly refractory, with a thin, elaborate wheel-thrown finish. The firing is not very hard, and although there is a faint natural glaze on the shoulder, it has not yet been fully melted. Small jars with three ears like this are extremely rare, and few examples are known. This is a remarkable example of an old Hokuriku region jar with three ears, dating from the latter half of the 8th century.
