Height 13.4cm, diameter 46.5-47.5cm, base 18.9cm
This is known as a representative example of the early Ko-kutani style in overglaze enamels, and together with Figure 2, is probably the largest of its kind. It is a large flat bowl with a tiered rim, and the mouth rises low. The bowl has a low, thick base that is small in relation to the diameter. The entire surface, except for the tatami mat, is almost evenly coated with white glaze. A large boat is depicted in the center of the circular window, with a drying net behind it, and rocks and a waterfall in the foreground on the left and right. The circular window is surrounded by a serrated petal pattern, and a corrugated arabesque pattern is drawn on the open edge with red lines, and red pigments are applied to make it look as if it were a white slip pattern. The composition of the arabesque design around the rim, which looks like a white slip on a red ground, harmonizes well with the dark tones of purple, green, and yellow of the overglaze painting. Furthermore, the thick lines in thin underglaze blue on the mouth rim make the rim design stand out even more. On the reverse side, cloud patterns centering on whirlpools are arranged on three sides, and the characters “Taimei” are painted in red overglaze enamels on the base, which are similar to the “Taimei” inscription found on Ko-Imari Sometsuke vessels. The glaze is peeling off in the base and there are finger marks on the side of the base.
