Height 7.5 cm, mouth diameter 32.7 cm, base diameter 17.1 cm, Honzenji
This dish has a similar form to the large dish with a tiger and shrimp design in overglaze enamels, but this piece is completely free of underglaze blue, both inside and outside. The prospect is decorated with poorly rendered chrysanthemums and peacocks, and clouds are scattered in the sky. The peacock’s feathers and feet, as well as the ash leaves in the lower right corner, are painted in red, but the brushwork on the peacock’s feet is quite skillful. The center of the stand is inscribed in red with a unique horn inscription, and the reverse side is decorated with an arabesque-style design in unrestrained brushwork with black lines and green overglaze enamels.
This piece was handed down from Honzenji Temple in Daishoji-cho, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, where there is a bell inscribed in 18 Kan’ei by Saijiro Goto, who was associated with the temple. However, the fact that the height of the base is almost one-half the size of the diameter of the dish is not seen on large pieces of pottery excavated from old kilns. The yellow paint is slightly muddy among the chrysanthemum overglaze enamel.
