It is said that Insei was good at making incense containers with bird motifs such as cranes and mandarin ducks, and there are quite a few excellent examples left. This incense container is one such example, skillfully depicting a cute little brown-eared bulbul. The beak is red, the white head and round eyes are black, and the rest of the body is painted in rust with feathers and white glaze. The addition of red overglaze painting only on the beak is unexpected and quite elegant. The flat bottom is stamped in the center with the seal of Insei.
