There are various types of polychrome vases, including Sansai, green glazed, ash glazed, and Sue ware: all of which were used as Buddhist vessels. Sansai vases, including this one, are known to have been excavated from prominent temples in the Kinai region, such as Shitennoji Temple, Nanjiga Haiji Temple, and others. This vessel was discovered in 1975 during construction work at the Toin of Yakushiji Temple. The upper half of the vessel was crushed, and the neck of the mouth was later repaired. It is made of soft yellowish-white clay with a green glaze with a continuous arc pattern common to Sansai, and brown glaze at the intersection of the patterns. The green glaze is fused over the white glaze in the shape of a deerstalk and makes the design more complex.
