Excavated from Kiln No. 5, Kurozasa-cho, Miyoshi City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
9th century
Height 11.5cm, mouth diameter 4.4cm, body diameter 8.6cm, bottom diameter 6.5cm
Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum
This pottery is made of white high-quality clay with black sesame, and has a light green ash glaze applied by brush from the neck of the mouth to the upper half of the body. The small size of the neck and the large bulge of the body indicate that it was made in the latter half of the 9th century. This is one of the few examples of a small handled vase that retains its perfect shape.
Works from the Kurozasa No. 5 kiln are distinguished from those from other kilns at first glance by their very distinctive clay and glaze. In particular, this hand-formed vase was transported to Akita Prefecture and other remote areas, providing a clue to the extent of trade at the Sanage kiln.
