This tea bowl does not quite evoke the feelings of “wabi” or “sabi.” This is because the clay is very dense and has strong adhesive properties, resulting in a hard firing.
Therefore, it is the most suitable clay for tea caddies, and there are many famous tea caddies made from this clay.
Takatori-yaki is counted among the Seven Kilns of Enshu, and as can be seen from the illustration, it is highly technical. The bottom is beveled, and the shape is slightly thin and half-cylindrical.
The tea-yellow glaze is applied thickly and generously, but whether it harmonizes with matcha is questionable. The criteria for a tea bowl are to enhance the aroma of the tea and to make it taste delicious.
In that sense, Takatori-yaki is generally considered suitable for tea caddies and water jars.
