Sanyu: tea bowl, known as “Akitsushima”, Black Raku

Height: 8.5 cm, Mouth Diameter: 10.8 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.7 cm
This is one of the “200 Sanyu” tea bowls, a modestly shaped bowl with a semi-cylindrical form. The rim features subtle undulations, the body is straight, and the base is fitted with a small, flat, folded foot. The fine carvings encircling the foot and the elegant treatment of the slightly stepped section from the waist to the foot are commonly seen in Sanyu tea bowls, revealing the artist’s characteristic style. The black glaze applied over the entire bowl has melted evenly without any unevenness. Three kiln marks remain on the foot, and a seal mark is stamped inside the foot, though it is indistinct due to the glaze. On the lid’s exterior, “Two Hundred, Sa-iri” is inscribed by Sa-iri, and on the underside, Jushinsai has inscribed the signature “Akitsushima” (seal).
