Sanyu: cylindrical tea bowl, known as “Kozaru”, Black Raku

Height: 8.4 cm, Mouth Diameter: 9.0 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.5 cm
Yuki Art Museum
This cylindrical tea bowl features a rim that curves inward and a strongly flared, low waist, with a depression carved into one side of the body. The footring attached to the flat bottom is carved in the “katabuki” style, and three tool marks remain on the flat, stepped surface. Since there are tea bowls of this form among the Chojiro-yaki cylindrical tea bowls, this piece can be considered an imitation of them.
The black glaze applied over the entire surface shows some unevenness in places but has melted well. A large tea pool has been carved out on one side of the interior. On the underside of the lid, Jushinsai has inscribed: “Black tea bowl made by Saiiri, inscribed ‘Little Monkey’ (signature).”
