Early Period Makie Lacquerware: Flying Crane Design with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay, Rectangular Incense Box

Dimensions
Height: 3.3 cm
Mouth Diameter: 6.7–8.7 cm
Weight: 60 g

Like the previously mentioned “Crane Design Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Kōgō,” this incense container was also part of a set of cosmetic accessories belonging to a noblewoman, kept within a handbox. It belongs to the earliest period of maki-e kōgō.
This kōgō features a long rectangular shape with a tin rim. A pine-eating crane design is arranged in mother-of-pearl and maki-e on a pear-skin ground.
The inside of the lid and body is pear-ground with scattered maki-e designs of small pine trees.
The surface shows signs of use, giving it a pleasing patina. It is highly regarded, often paired with the previously mentioned incense box as a pair of masterpieces, and may be considered the earliest known example of this type of incense box.
