217 Jiaozi Bowl with Floral and Bird Design
Height: 9.2 cm; Mouth diameter: 17.4 cm; Base diameter: 7.1 cm
These two bowls, one large and one small, form a set of three nested bowls, with a third, smaller bowl added to the top. Figure 216 is the largest, with a purple ground; Figure 217 is medium-sized, primarily yellow; and a small bowl with a floral arabesque pattern on a green ground is stacked on top. All are flared-rimmed bowls, with the outer patterns rendered in raised lines and the inner patterns in incised lines.
Figure 216 features a branch motif in yellow and green glaze arranged on all four sides of the exterior, with blue birds interspersed between them. A pale blue wave pattern encircles the lower rim, and the entire piece is covered in a deep purple glaze. On the interior, beneath the glaze, a faint dragon motif and a treasure-filled pattern are engraved in a scroll-like style.
Figure 217 depicts grass, birds, and insects in blue, light blue, green, and purple glazes, with a yellow glaze applied to the background. On the interior, auspicious birds and treasure motifs are engraved in a scrollwork style. Both vessels have a white glaze applied to the interior of the footring, and the “Yongle” mark is stamped at the center of the footring.
