Black Bowl, Inscribed “Kotaka,” by Michi-iri

Height: 8.9 cm; Mouth Diameter: 9.7–10.6 cm; Foot Diameter: 4.9 cm
As Jushinsai Sōsa has written “Ichinuki-kuro Kotaka Sō (signature)” on the underside of the inner box lid, the vermilion spots within the black glaze are vivid, and at first glance, it appears to be the work of Ichinuki. However, the thin, clam-shaped rim, the wide and deep interior that does not retain tea stains, the sharp, angular carving on the folded foot rim, and the “Raku” seal stamped inside the foot—all these features point to this being a work by Dōnyū. Nevertheless, for a Dōnyū piece, this is a small, elegant tea bowl.
