Könyū: tea bowl, known as “Baika”, Black Raku

Height: 7.8 cm, Mouth Diameter: 10.8 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.0 cm
This tea bowl features a rim with five distinct ridges, a tapered body, and a rounded, flared base. The base features a small, flat foot with a folded edge, and a low, swirl-shaped kabuto-kin (helmet-shaped decoration) is clearly carved into the interior of the foot. Five seals are stamped along the lower rim of the body. While the foot is left unglazed to reveal the raw clay and covered with black glaze, the black glaze has melted somewhat unevenly, revealing a snake-and-scorpion glaze pattern where the glaze has cracked.
A so-called “Hachiraku” seal is stamped on the side of the foot, and the inscription “Twelfth Generation” is carved into it.
