Kōnyü: tea bowl, known as “Haru no Yuki”, Black Raku

Height: 8.5 cm, Mouth Diameter: 11.2 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.5 cm
This tea bowl features a powerful form with gentle undulations at the rim and a tapered lower body. The compact, well-defined foot has a flat base and is deeply carved on the inside. The foot is left unglazed to reveal the clay, while the rest of the bowl is covered in a thick, black glaze that forms a curtain-like effect. A large mark known as the “receiving mark” is decoratively stamped on the lower rim, with that area left to appear yellowed. On the side of the footring is stamped the “Hachiraku” seal in the hand of Ishikawa Jōzan, which Kōnyū primarily used from the age of twenty-five to sixty-three. On the underside of the inner box lid, Seisai has inscribed: “Made by Kichizaemon, Black Tea Bowl, Inscription: Spring Snow, Left (Signature).”
