Ichigen: tea bowl, Red Raku

Height: 7.2 cm; Mouth diameter: 11.8–12.8 cm; Foot diameter: 4.6 cm
Chikusu Art Museum
It comes in an original Ichigen box, with “Red Tea Bowl, Signed Ichigen” inscribed on the lid. Ichigen was skilled at imitating Kōetsu’s style, and while he also produced works in the styles of Chōjirō, Dōnyū, and Ichinyū, the execution of this piece clearly falls within the Kōetsu imitation style.
The body is shaped elliptically, and the rim, which curves outward on one side, is distinctly in the style of Kōetsu; the rim and body feature frequent use of the “ore” technique. The foot is low and nearly circular, with a wide base. A distinct swirl-shaped crest is carved inside the foot, and the red glaze covering the entire piece is somewhat pale yet bright and vivid, with some fire-change effects appearing in places. Made in Kyōhō 7 (1722), the year of Ichigen’s death, the inscription “61 years old” is carved on the right side of the foot, and “Made by Ichigen” on the left.
