At first glance, this tea bowl also has a similar charm to those by Sōnyū, but Ryōryōsai wrote on the inside of the inner box lid, “Owned by Nyoshinshō; a large, cracked black tea bowl by Ichigen, inscribed ‘Suminoe,’ etc.,” indicating that it was passed down to Fusen-an. It is a tea bowl with a rich, rounded, and gentle form, featuring a small, compact foot ring with three marks remaining.
A black glaze with a citrus peel-like texture covers the entire bowl, resembling that of Sōnyū. A thin layer of glaze runs around the rim, with vivid streaks of red glaze appearing in some areas, and faint traces of red glaze visible elsewhere. The construction of the footring is similar to that of Ichinyū. This is one of the finest examples of Ichigen’s red-glazed tea bowls.
