As the saying goes, “Iga has no hanging vases, but Shigaraki does,” hanging vases from Iga are a rare find.
“Uzukumaru” refers to the shape of a person crouching. It takes the form of a slightly forward-leaning, cross-legged gourd.
The beidoro glaze flows from the rim to the shoulder and stops at the edge of the base. Additionally, scorch marks extend from the shoulder area across the entire body, and the two elements harmonize to create a sense of wabi-sabi.
The base is mixed with small stones and has a geta-style sole.
Around the end of the Meiji period, it was offered for sale at an auction held by the Ikushima family of Osaka, at the same time a Cochin large turtle-shaped incense container was sold to the Fujita family for 90,000 yen; this piece subsequently entered the collection of the Hayakawa family of Bishu.
