Shino vases are rare; aside from this one, only a single-flower vase cherished by Kobayashi Itsuo is known to exist.
As with the “Yellow Seto Travel Pillow” mentioned earlier, the technique of creating stepped sections by leaving vertical brushstrokes on the neck is common to works from the Mino kiln.
The patterns depicted on the body likely represent early spring willows and ferns; the iron glaze’s hues are beautifully rendered, and against the soft white surface of the Shino ware, the piece exudes a truly spring-like atmosphere, presenting a richly poetic appearance.
