13th century
Height 20.4 cm, mouth diameter 12.0 cm, body diameter 17.8 cm, bottom diameter 9.5 cm
This is one of the small jars commonly found at the Atsumi kiln. The neck of the mouth is still relatively large, but the shoulder has lost its tension, suggesting that it was made around the beginning of the 13th century. The shoulder is inscribed with a large, bold “dai” (大). The surface is grayish black due to smoky firing, and the shoulder is covered with an ash glaze applied with a brush, giving it a yellowish green color.
