Isubai (Distylium racemosum ash)

marusankakusikaku

Ashes of the chair tree. It has long been used exclusively as a fluxing agent for porcelain glazes. It is produced in and around Miyazaki Prefecture. Wood ash is used for glazes because of the calcium carbonate it contains. Although lime is now widely used in place of wood ash, chair ash is exclusively prized for fine works of art.
