Early 15th century
Height 11.8 cm, mouth diameter 7.0 cm, body diameter 13.0 cm, bottom diameter 11.0 cm
This is one of the oldest of the so-called “Echizen oshaguro jars. However, it is not certain whether these small vases, which have a kataguchi-shaped mouth with part of the rim bent into a steeple, were originally made as ogyakuro pots or not. This small one-necked jar was excavated from a medieval cemetery behind Horakuji Temple as a cinerary urn.
It has a slightly coarse reddish-brown clay surface covered with a yellowish-sesame paste natural glaze on the rim and shoulder. There is a pattern of painted mark in the center of the body.
