This is a porcelain bowl used in the Edo period near Hirakata, Settsu Province (Hirakata City, Osaka Prefecture) to sell sake and food to boats commuting on the Yodo River.
They sold sake and rice cakes in a wild manner, shouting “Mochi kurawanka, sake kurawanka” (rice cake kurawanka, sake kurawanka), claiming to have received permission from Ieyasu Tokugawa.
Originally, they were either coarse blue-and-white porcelain from the Hizen region (Saga and Nagasaki prefectures) or Tobe ware from Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture), but later Kosobe ware from Settsu was used as well. Later, Kosobe ware from Settsu was used as well. It was prized by some for its unrefined elegance, and was later imitated by master craftsmen in Kyoto. (Later, master potters in Kyoto imitated it.)
