Sakai-ryu is a school of tea ceremony established in the late Muromachi period (1333-1573). It is also called Shaogo-ryu. It was founded in the town of Sakai in Izumi-no-kuni (Osaka Prefecture) by Shaogu, who was influenced by the Nara school of tea ceremony, and was based on the philosophy of Wabi-Shibi (quietness and quietness) as expressed by Shuko, the founder of the Nara school.
It was developed as a tea ceremony for the townspeople by many disciples of the Sakai Shu, and was later developed into the Rikyu school by Sen no Rikyu, a disciple of Ichi.
