SOMEKAWA
SOMEKAWA

Chukoh specialty. Kuniyaki tea caddy, Takatori ware. The inscription was chosen by Enshu Kobori at the request of the Marquis Kuroda, and is associated with the poem “Somegawa wo Wataramu no Hito no Ka deka Iro ni Narimasu Toto no Nakaramu” from “Ise Monogatari” (The Tale of Ise). Somegawa is a famous scenic spot in Kyushu. This thinly made, highly refined ware has a wonderful variety of glaze colors, such as ame, white, and yellow. It was handed down to the Marquis Kuroda of Chikuzen, and belonged to the Kuroda family in a box together with “Autumn Night” of the same hand, but later passed through Denzaburo Fujita to Seigai Inoue. (Kokin Meibutsu Ruiju, Rimpo Kameryu, Taisho Meikikan)
