Shijyukoku (forty stone)

marusankakusikaku

One of the most famous leaf tea pots. It holds seven and a half kilograms of leaf tea and is even larger than the Matsushima jar. It is said that Ashikaga Yoshimasa praised this jar and added it to the Higashiyama Gomotsu collection, inscribing it with the name Shijukoku (forty stone). Later, it was handed down from Hachiya Shoza to Zenya Munenaru in Sakai, and was presented to Hideyoshi at some point. Since Mikazuki and Matsushima were destroyed by fire in the Honnoji Incident, 40 koku was called the best pot under heaven by Hideyoshi. It was said to be the finest of the three pots, rich in quietness. The detailed description is given in the article “Sotan Chayu Nikki (Diary of Tea Ceremony)” about the tea ceremony held at the Osaka Castle on the third day of the New Year in 1587. It was also served at the Kitano Grand Tea Ceremony.
