Karatsu ware

A deep tea bowl in the shape of a cylinder. The deep one is called “Fukatsutsu” and the not so deep one is called “Hantutsu”. There is a Kizeto tsutsu chawan that is designed to look like a deep mukozuke, and Oribe ware (Shino, Setoguro, etc.) has a very fine example (Shino Oribe tsutsu is a famous example). Oribe ware, such as Shino and Setoguro, also has a great deal of likeness (Shino Oribe tsutsu is a famous example). Chinese and Korean wares, such as Kimiidera and Undo, are also half-tube. According to Morisada-kasono, tubular tea bowls were widely used until around the Bunka period (1804-18), but fell into disuse after the appearance of smaller teacups.
