This is a typical Shigaraki jar that has been well known since ancient times. The gently sloping shoulder line, the body half shaped like a vertical arithmetic slab that is bent at the center of the body, and the light green natural glaze that flows down from the shoulder to the lower half of the body make this jar particularly majestic. In the center of the shoulder there is a Shigaraki-specific “nawame” or “hinogaki” design, which is a unique Shigaraki pattern. This is probably the oldest Shigaraki pot known today. The clay is grayish-white with a large amount of feldspar, and has a unique Shigaraki flavor, as if the feldspar had melted to produce a reddish-brown color and was encrusted with small white dots. The body is made in a three-tiered hagi-zukuri style.
