This is one of the most beautiful of the many small kataguchi jars from Bizen. It is made of high quality clay and wheel-thrown, with the mouth rim partially pressed down from both sides to create a bird-shaped mouth. The lower half of the body is decorated with fine “soma-gaki” (thinly painted) engravings. It is well fired and has a slight red fire color, with a yellowish-white sesame sprinkled natural glaze on the mouth and shoulders.
