This jar belongs to the family of “wariguchi” round-bodied vases. The five-stage hagi-zukuri technique, in which the body is made by winding up clay strings, is clearly evident in the bent joints. The mouth rim still retains the old hagi-guchi technique.
It is thought to have been made in the late 14th century. It is well finished, with a yellowish-brown natural glaze covering the mouth rim and part of the body, but it has not yet flowed down.
