The Kyogoku name is likely derived from the Kyogoku family. It is known alongside those from Otsu and Bishamon-do as a famous persimmon stem bowl. The body and waist are divided into two distinct sections, with a strong, vigorous form. The sharp cut at the rim and the fine, well-defined lines add a crisp, elegant charm. The glaze has a varied and intriguing texture, with a beautiful bead-like finish. The front features a large fire mark, creating an interesting focal point. The interior of the tea bowl has distinct swirls, adding to its appeal, and the foot is well-formed and sturdy. The mountain-shaped indentation on the rim further enhances the aesthetic appeal. This piece, with its subdued yet dignified presence, is a prime example of the “wabi-sabi” style.
