Black-stamped Tsutsubaki-style tea bowl, inscribed “Seizan,” by Kōnyū

Height: 10.1 cm, Mouth diameter: 9.8 cm, Foot diameter: 4.3 cm
On the underside of the inner box lid, Seisai Sōsa has written: “Made by Kōnyū, black tea bowl, numbered seal, inscribed ‘Seizan,’ left (signature).” This is an Inzumi-style tea bowl and a fine example of Kōnyū’s black tea bowls. The rim, which curves inward, forms a gentle undulation resembling the Five Peaks; the bowl tapers gradually toward the waist, and from the waist to the footring, it retains a rounded shape, creating a high-waisted form. The footring is small, with a light, carved “Tomoe” crest inside and vertical grooves along the waist. The black glaze flows smoothly and melts well, but a “distant mountain”-style glaze omission is left at the base of the body, over which a transparent glaze has been applied. It was likely named “Snow Mountain” in reference to this effect. There is a semicircular tea pool at the bottom, and it is rare to see all of the seals Kōnyū used during his lifetime—excluding the seal granted by Prince Fushimi—impressed around the unglazed foot rim.
