Keinyū: shallow tea bowl with bell design, Black Raku

Height: 5.9 cm, Mouth Diameter: 12.6 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.2 cm
Like the two previous works, this tea bowl is also a black flat tea bowl; however, since the Raku seal stamped inside the footring is the “retired” seal, we know this piece was created after Kei-nyu turned 55. The overall form is thin-walled, with a varied height at the rim and gently spaced dimples on the body. The base features a wide, low footring with a stepped profile characteristic of Kei-nyu, carved out from the clay. The black glaze, applied to the interior and exterior of the footring, melts smoothly. On the interior surface, a single bell is depicted by scraping away the glaze with a brush. On the underside of the box lid, Matmyosai has inscribed: “Bell-Motif Flat Teabowl, made by Kei-nyu (seal).”
